Why actually Ethanol ?
First, lets take a view beyond our national borders to Brazil, Latin America:
In 2007 the majority of new registered vehicles is already equipped by the vehicle manufacturer with the so-called FFV (flexible Fuel Vehicle) technology, which was considerably co-developed among other things by Volkswagen and Bosch.

The decision for a new vehicle with FFV technology was easy for most Brazilians from the outset much. The price for a litre of ethanol (alcóol) in Brazil is compared to regular gasoline just about 40-60%. The slightly higher costs for a new passenger car with FFV technology from the factory, amortises accordingly very fast.
Meanwhile there are also countries in Europe and the US which progressed regarding ethanol as a fuel for passenger cars. Take Sweden: Here the models Ford Focus and C-Max have been offered by Ford for about 2 years now, with the so-called FFV technology. According to a report of the renown German magazine „Focus“, Ford Europe delivers the model Focus in Sweden to over 80% with its FFV technology. The classical Focus with petrol-only engines come thus within short time to genuine shop guardians.
